Options for IconShepherd
You can change the way IconShepherd works by using the Options for IconShepherd screen, that you can open by selecting Options from the IconShepherd menu:
This screen has the following areas:
Auto-start IconShepherd when Windows starts
If this option is selected, then IconShepherd would start automatically when a user logs in to Windows. If this option is not selected, then you would need to start IconShepherd manually, by using its desktop icon, whenever you want to use it.
Restore icons automaically when Windows starts
If this option is selected, then IconShepherd would automatically restore icon positions from the layout selected below when a user logs in to Windows. If this option is not selected, then you would need to use the Restore icons command on IconShepherd menu whenever you want to restore the previously remembered icon positions.
Remember icons automatically when icons are moved
If this option is selected, then IconShepherd would monitor the state of the desktop icons and if it detects that an icon is moved, it would automatically remember the new positions of all desktop icons under a name derived from the currend date and time. If this option is not selected, then you would need to use the Remember icons command on the IconShepherd menu whenever you want it to remember the current icon positions.
Show Desktop menu on right-click
If this option is selected, then IconShepherd adds the Desktop item on top of the IconShepherd menu, when you use the right mouse button to click on the IconShepherd notification icon. (The Desktop menu does not appear if your click with the left button or launch IconShepherd using its desktop icon.) The Desktop menu allows you to open the desktop icons by choosing them from the Desktop menu, without the need to locate and double-click the icon on the desktop itself. You may find this option useful if your desktop is often covered by several application windows, making it more time consuming to uncover the desktop in order to open an icon. However, if you have a large number of icons on the desktop, handling the Desktop menu may slow down the operation of IconShepherd. If this happens to you, you may want to deselect this option, to stop IconShepherd from creating and displaying the Desktop menu.
Include subfolders
This option modifies behavior of the Desktop menu described above. If this option is selected, then for each folder you might have on the desktop, IconShepherd creates a separate submenu, each listing the items in that folder. If this option is not selected, then each folder remains a separate item on the Desktop menu, that opens the appropriate folder in File Explorer window when you select it from the Desktop menu.
Save icon layouts automatically into the file...
If this option is selected, then IconShepherd would save all icon layouts that it currently remembers into the file specified below the option. (You can specify a different location of the file, if the default location is not suitable for your needs.) You may find this option useful if you want to include the icon layouts into the regular backup of files you probably have. If at some point you would need to restore the icon layouts from the backup, you would use the Import command on the Manage layouts screen to load the icon layouts from the file into the software.
Check for updates automatically
If this option is selected, then IconShepherd would check periodically for the availability of an update to its software. If this option is not selected, you would need to visit our web site to see if a newer version of IconShepherd is available for download and update.
