You can customize the behavior of HostName Commander in some situations to better suit your requirements and personal working style by changing its options. To change the options, press the Options button on the menu bar:
(or press the Ctrl+O keys). As a result, the Options dialog box will be shown:
This dialog box contains the following areas:
If you select this option for the first time, you will be prompted to set up a password to protect HostName Commander from being used by the unauthorized users. If you have previously set up such a password, you can change it by pressing the Set up the Password button. If you set up this password, then you will have to enter it next time you run HostName Commander.
To stop HostName Commander from asking you for a password at startup, clear the Protect HostName Commander with a password option. Or, click on the Set up the Password button and leave the password areas empty while pressing the OK button, that will erase the existing password, if any.
If you ever forget your HostName Commander password, you can reset it with the Reset Password command.
If you select this option, HostName Commander will display its taskbar icon, giving you quick access to the Enable/Disable HostName Commander commands. If you choose the For current user only option, the taskbar icon will be displayed only when you login to Windows with the current login name and password. If you choose the For all users of this computer option, the taskbar icon will be displayed for all users. Note that the For all users of this computer option supercedes the For current user only one. Also, if you have set up a password to protect HostName Commander (see above), you can select the option to protect the taskbar icon commands with the same password, too.
If you select this option, then every time you attempt to exit HostName Commander, it will prompt you to confirm that you indeed want it to exit. You may want to enable this option if you often find yourself inadvertently closing HostName Commander.
If you select this option, HostName Commander will display a confirmation prompt when you use the Delete command to delete a host name or IP address, before actually deleting the item. You may want to disable this option, because you can use the Undo command to restore the accidentally deleted items back.
If you select this option, then you can use the Esc key to exit HostName Commander. You may want to enable this option if you often find the conventional method of closing a program (by clicking on the X button in its title bar) too slow or inconvenient.
If you select this option, then HostName Commander will let you edit the host names and IP addresses directly, without opening the modification dialog box. To edit an item directly, you need to select it, and then click on it with the mouse once, or press the F2 key.
If you do not select this option, then the in-place editing of the host names and IP addresses would be disabled, and you would need to use the modification dialog box to change their properties. You may want to disable this option if you find yourself often clicking on the selected items and starting the in-place editing inadvertently.
If you select this option, HostName Commander will let you enter host names with the uppercase characters in them. If you do not select this option, then only the host names which contain no uppercase characters will be accepted as valid host names.
If you select this option, HostName Commander will let you enter host names with the extended characters (with the ASCII codes grater than 127) in them. If you do not select this option, then only the host names which contain no extended characters will be accepted as valid host names.
This option lets you change the way HostName Commander is displaying the Clean Up the Browser Cache prompt when you save changes to the host name information.
