Speed up web browsing with HostName Commander
As you probably know, when you enter an address of a web site such as www.google.com or www.yahoo.com into your web browser, in order to connect to the web site the browser first needs to find out the IP address of the web server that corresponds to the web site address you have entered. In order to do that, the web browser connects to the so-called DNS server, and provides it with the address of the web site that you have entered. The DNS server looks up the web site name in its tables and sends the appropriate IP address back to the web browser. Finally, your web browser uses the IP address to establish the connection to the web server and display its contents.
The process described above happens every time you use your web browser (you might not notice it, but it does happen!) If your Internet connection is not very fast, it may make sense for you to use HostName Commander to map of the host names of the web sites that you visit often to their IP addresses locally on your own computer, and save your web browser quite a few trips to the DNS server, which would result in the increased speed of the web browsing for you.
To set this up with HostName Commander, simply determine the IP address of the web site you visit often, and add that information to the list of the host names managed by HostName Commander. Save the changes, and from that time on, whenever you browse to that web site, your web browser will be getting the IP address from HostName Commander, instead of connecting to the DNS server.
Keep in mind, however, that web sites are often moved from one server to another by their web developers, so you need to periodically verify that the IP address you have set up with HostName Commander is still the correct address of the server. If the real IP address has changed, simply modify the IP address for the appropriate host name with HostName Commander, and your web browser will start connecting to the new server after that.
