Lists of ad servers

There are several lists of the ad servers available on the Internet, some of which are listed below, along with the instructions on how to import them into HostName Commander.

Please note that we provide the links below as a convenience for you only. We are not affiliated with these web sites and their operators in any way, we have no control over their content, and we neither endorse nor approve the lists available at those web sites. The links below are provised AS-IS, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, USE THEM ON YOUR OWN RISK!

  • Peter Lowe's Ad-Blocking List

What to do with this list:

    1. Click on the link above to display the list in a new window.

    2. Click within the web browser window that contains the list and press Ctrl+A to select the whole list, and then press Ctr+C to copy it onto the Windows Clipboard.

    3. Now run HostName Commander, and choose the Import host name list command (see the User's Guide for more infromation on this command).

    4. When the Import Host Name List dialog box appears on the screen, paste (Ctrl+V) the list of adservers into the Host name list box.

    5. While the Import Host Name List dialog box is still on the screen, select the IP address you want the new host names to be added to (such as 127.0.0.1 (Ads) ) and press OK.

  • Stephen Martin's / Mike Meyer's Ad-Blocking List

CAUTION: This list is LARGE! If you use Windows 9x/Me, you may not be able to import it in one operation, due to the limitations of those versions of Windows. Also, if imported in its entirety, it may slow down your computer. If your computer is not very fast (less than 1GHz), you may want to use the smaller server list (see above).

What to do with this list:

    1. Before you begin, make sure you know how to handle the Zip files and have software that can decompress such files.

    2. Click on the link above to download the file hosts127001.zip Use your Zip software to uncompress the file into some temporary folder on your hard disk.

    3. Run HostName Commander, and choose the Import host name list command (see the User's Guide for more information on this command).

    4. When the Import Host Name List dialog box appears on the screen, click on the Load from file button and navigate to the uncompressed file HOSTS127001 to load its contents into the Host name list box. Note that if you use Windows 95,98, or ME, you may see the "Not enough memory" or similar error message. In this case you would need to manually split the large list in smaller chunks and import each such chunk separately. You may be better off using the smaller host name list (see above) instead.

    5. Review a few first lines to be imported; if there is the line 127.0.0.1 localhost present, delete. (Because localhost is not a host name of an ad server.)

    6. While the Import Host Name List dialog box is still on the screen, select the IP address you want the new host names to be added to (such as 127.0.0.1 (Ads) ) and press OK. Be patient! Even if you have a very fast computer, it may take several minutes to import such a large list. If your computer is on the slow side, be prepared to wait an hour or more.
