How to hide a file with Folder Guard:

You can hide a file in about the same way as you would hide a folder. (Please read about hiding the folders first, to better understand what's involved in hiding files with Folder Guard).

The only difference between hiding files and folders with Folder Guard is that, unlike folders, files are not displayed in the Folder Guard window by default, so you must add the files you want to hide to its window first. After that, the procedure is practically the same as with folders.

IMPORTANT: First of all, a word of warning: Folder Guard is a powerful tool and should be used responsibly. Using it thoughtlessly, you can inadvertently make your computer inaccessible. For example, it is very easy with Folder Guard to prevent access to the Desktop folder, and make Windows start with a blank screen after you reboot. DO NOT try to protect file with your important documents until you have tested Folder Guard on some practice files! (Or, at least, make sure you have the copies of the documents saved in some other folder before trying to hide them with Folder Guard.) Only after you have tried Folder Guard to protect a test file and got used to the way it works and operates, you can try to use it for protection of the "real" documents and folders. Also, it's always a good idea to back up your hard disk before trying any new software, including Folder Guard!

Step 1. Get your system ready

Create a test file somewhere on your hard disk, on the Desktop, or in any other place where you can create files (see the How to hide a folder article for the details).

Step 2. Add the file to hide to the Folder Guard window

If Folder Guard is not running, click on the Start button, and choose Programs - Folder Guard - Folder Guard from the Start menu. The main window of Folder Guard should appear on the screen shortly:

Run Folder Guard to hide files

Before you can hide a file with Folder Guard, you must add it to the list of objects displayed in the Folder Guard window (folders are added to the list automatically). To add a file to the list, choose Edit - Add file from the menu:

Locate the file you want to hide

Find the test file you have created and press OK. Folder Guard will add it to the list of objects and automatically select it in the list for you:

Add the file you want to hide

Step 3. Hide file and restrict access to it

From this point on, the procedure of hiding a file is the same as hiding a folder: you need to assign the hidden and no access attributes to the file using the menu or the toolbar of Folder Guard:

Step 4. Enable the protection and test the results.

The procedure is exactly the same as described in the How to hide a folder article, please see it for the details.
