Utilities for Windows File Manager
Note: The utilities listed below are for the "old" Windows File Manager (winfile.exe). It used to be the main file management tool in the days of Windows 3.x and Windows NT 3.x, however it is no longer included with the latest version of Windows (ME, 2000, XP and newer). So, unless your version of Windows includes winfile.exe, you cannot use the files below. It's a real pity, because with our FM StepUp you could actually use the "old" Windows File Manager quite productively. If you miss the old good Windows File Manager, you may want to give our own AB Commander for Windows XP/2000/NT/Me/9x a try: it' a complete replacement for both Windows File Manager and Windows Explorer.
We are offering the files below for free download (yes, they are completely free now, no purchase or registration required to use them continuously), for those of you who have not upgraded to the latest version of Windows yet. Enjoy!

FM StepUp
for Windows 3.1x/95/98 (16-bit version) FREE!
FM StepUp (that is, "File Manager StepUp" ) makes File Manager an actually usable and user-friendly application: it provides history lists & 3D effects for dialog boxes; customizable Execute Menu and Quick Menu a'la Windows 95, allows you to use your favorite text editor to view or edit files with a right-click, lets you quickly launch applications directly from File Manager menu. Special commands include: "Total size" of
a directory, including subdirectories; "Run Screen Saver", "Restart Windows", etc.
When used under Windows 3.1x, the Win32s subsystem is not required.
When used under Windows 95/98, FM StepUp supports long file names (provided that the FMLFNS utility is also installed).

FM StepUp NT
for Windows NT 3.5x/4.0 (32-bit version) FREE!
This is a special 32-bit version of FM StepUp (see above) designed to be used with Windows NT only. Note that the "new" Windows user unterface is not required: FM StepUp NT runs on both 3.5x and 4.x versions of Windows NT.

FM Toolbar
for Windows 3.1x/95/98 (16-bit version) FREE!
FM Toolbar (that is, "File Manager Toolbar" - featured in Computer Shopper,
Windows World, and other publications, FM Toolbar is an attractive alternative to
the "native" Windows toolbar. Fully user-customizable, it provides
about twice as many buttons, support for MS Tools, handy "tooltips"
for novice users (a'la toolbar for Word and Excel).

FM Guard
for Windows 3.1x/95/98 (16-bit version) FREE!
FM Guard (that is, "File Manager Guard") allows you to set up [Restrictions] and selectively disable
features and capabilities of Windows File Manager. You can limit user access to any drive of your choice, prevent users from performing any command of File Manager, changing its configuration,running programs or opening documents.

Note users of Windows 95 and later: FM Guard restricts only the "old"
File Manager, which is still available in Windows 95/98 as Winfile.exe.
Also, only the "old style" common dialogs (used by 16-bit applications)
are restricted. For Windows 95 and later we offer a separate product,
Folder Guard for Windows XP/2000/NT4/Me/98/95.
